Website Mistake

THE HIDDEN TRAPS THAT WEB DESIGN COMPANY MALAYSIA WON’T TELL YOU

Look, I’m going to be straight with you. The web design industry in Malaysia has some dirty little secrets that most companies won’t share until you’re already locked in. I’ve seen too many business owners get burned, and it’s time someone talked about this openly.

1. They Own Your Domain Name, Not You

This is probably the biggest trap out there. You pay for everything, you think you own your website, but surprise—the domain is registered under the web design company’s name.

When you want to leave or switch providers, suddenly you’re held hostage. They might refuse to transfer it, charge you ridiculous fees (I’ve seen companies ask for RM3,000 just to release a domain), or worse, let it expire and you lose it completely.

What to do:
Always register your domain under your own name or company name. Use your own email address. If they insist on doing it for you, make sure the ownership transfer happens immediately after registration.

2. The CMS is Married to Their Hosting

Many web design companies in Malaysia use proprietary or heavily customized CMS systems that only work on their hosting. They’ll sell you a “custom-built website” but what they don’t mention is that you can never move it elsewhere.

Want to switch to better hosting because theirs is slow? Too bad. The website literally won’t work anywhere else. You’re stuck paying their hosting fees forever, even if it’s RM200/month for what should cost RM50/month elsewhere.

The reality:
Insist on popular, portable platforms like WordPress, Shopify, or other standard CMS. These can be moved to any hosting provider. If they say their “proprietary system is better,” that’s usually code for “we want to lock you in.”

3. Parallax Scrolling Looks Cool But Kills Your SEO

Parallax websites are those fancy scrolling sites where backgrounds move at different speeds. They look impressive in presentations. Web design companies love showing them off because clients go “wow.”

But here’s what they won’t tell you: Google struggles to crawl them properly. They’re slow to load. Mobile experience is often terrible. Your SEO suffers because search engines can’t properly index single-page parallax sites.

You’re paying RM8,000-RM15,000 for a website that looks good but doesn’t bring in customers from Google. Great.

4. “Unlimited” Revisions That Aren’t Really Unlimited

The contract says “unlimited revisions” but after your third round of changes, suddenly there are “reasonable limits” and “scope creep” conversations. Each additional change now costs RM300-RM500.

Or they do make the changes, but take weeks to respond, hoping you’ll just give up and accept whatever they’ve done.

Watch out for:
Vague terms in contracts. Get specific numbers. “3 rounds of revisions with up to 5 changes per round” is better than “unlimited revisions” that aren’t really unlimited.

5. Stock Photos You Don’t Own the License For

Your website launches with beautiful photos. Six months later, you get a legal letter from Getty Images or Shutterstock demanding RM5,000 for copyright infringement.

Turns out, the web design company used stock photos from their own account, and the license doesn’t transfer to you. Or worse, they used images from Google without any license at all.

Protect yourself:
Ask for proof of image licenses. Better yet, provide your own photos or purchase licenses directly. If they’re using stock photos, make sure the license is purchased under your name.

6. The “Maintenance Package” That Does Nothing

After your site launches, they push a monthly maintenance package for RM150-RM300/month. Sounds reasonable for updates and security, right?

Except many of these packages do absolutely nothing. If you’re on WordPress, the updates are automatic anyway. They’re not monitoring your site. They’re not improving anything. You’re paying for peace of mind that doesn’t exist.

I’ve seen clients pay RM250/month for two years (that’s RM6,000!) and when their site got hacked, the company said “that’s not covered under maintenance.”

7. Hidden Costs for Basic Features

The quote says RM5,000 for a website. Sounds fair. Then you discover:

  • Contact form that actually works? Extra RM500
  • Google Maps integration? RM300 more
  • Social media icons that link properly? RM200
  • SSL certificate installation? RM400
  • Mobile responsive design? RM1,500 extra

Suddenly your RM5,000 website costs RM8,000. These should all be standard features in 2026, not add-ons.

8. They Use Cheap Shared Hosting But Charge Premium Prices

Your web design company charges you RM180/month for hosting. Sounds professional. What they don’t tell you is they’re reselling shared hosting that costs them RM80/year.

Your website shares server resources with 200 other sites. When one site gets traffic, yours slows down. But you’re paying RM2,160/year for hosting that should cost RM300-RM500/year depending on the storage size.

9. No Access to Your Own Website Backend

This is sneaky. They build your website but never give you admin access. Every tiny change—updating a phone number, changing business hours, adding a new product—requires calling them and paying RM100-RM300 per change.

You’re completely dependent on them for your own business website. Some companies justify this by saying “we don’t want you to break anything,” but really, they want that recurring revenue from small changes.

Demand:
Admin access from day one. If you break something, that’s what backups are for. It’s your website, you should control it.

10. The Contract Auto-Renews and is Nearly Impossible to Cancel

You sign up for one year of hosting and maintenance. Fine. But buried in page 7 of the contract is an auto-renewal clause. It automatically renews for another year unless you give 90 days written notice.

Miss that window? You’re locked in for another year. Want to cancel? There’s a penalty fee of 50% of the remaining contract value. I’ve seen business owners stuck paying for services they don’t want because the cancellation terms are deliberately complicated.

How to Protect Yourself

Here’s the bottom line: treat your website like you’d treat any major business asset.

  • Read every contract thoroughly. If something is unclear, ask. If they can’t explain it simply, that’s a red flag.
  • Own your domain and hosting accounts directly. The web design company can manage them, but you should be the account owner.
  • Get everything in writing. Verbal promises mean nothing when problems arise.
  • Ask for a list of what’s included and what costs extra before signing anything.
  • Check reviews and ask for references from clients who’ve worked with them for 2+ years, not just new clients.

Not all web design companies in Malaysia operate this way. There are honest, transparent ones out there. But these traps are common enough that you need to watch out for them.

Your website is often your first impression to potential customers. Don’t let it become a financial trap that drains your business for years. Ask the uncomfortable questions upfront. A good web design company will appreciate your diligence. A shady one will get defensive. Choose wisely.
